From the age of three, Austin knew that his female anatomy did not fit him. In middle school, he changed his name and began to dress as a boy. His family thought it was a phase, but he persisted. Now he will get surgery so he can breathe freely and finally, swim in public.
“Many people have seen a shorter 13 minute cut of the film, not to be confused with this polished 45 minute-version. The full version was professionally edited by Seattle-based Basil Shadid, and scored by Portland artists such as Chris Funk (of the Decemberists), Ashleigh Flynn, Jen Agosta and Radio Sloan.” — Sel Staley, Director
“Our film stays honest by not trying to represent every Deaf or trans person in the United States. Austin Unbound is about one sweet, brash, funny, complicated guy who’s brave enough to share his story with us.”– Mara Green, Assistant Director
Austin Unbound is a non-profit project produced in partnership with 501C(3) Film Action Oregon.
